I thought I’d share some images from my Tumblr, which I realised today I’ve now had for four years. It’s progressively turned into a portrait based image archive of women from the late 1800′s – early 1930′s (although you can dive into my archives for when I used to post lots of different vintage, images I just liked, fashion and lots of music).

I was noticing the particular type of women I post and thinking about what draws me to that aesthetic. It’s mostly the vampy, smokey eyed, raven haired silent screen era actresses. Obvious common favourites being Theda Bara, Alla Nazimova, Pola Negri etc. There’s just something I find intriguing about that European mystique, maybe it’s the Scorpio in me. I guess that’s part of what draws me so much to the flapper era, the style obviously but also the idea of a sassy gal just wanting to have a good time and answer to no one but herself. A real independent lay-deeee, am I right?

Anyway if vamps are your thing, do yourself a favour and follow the Drama of Exile Tumblr. Whilst I may have become slack here, I do still post every couple of days on there, as well as a regular influx of beauty and inappropriate behaviour on my Instagram.

Much love,

xx

Bringing In The New Year With Gloria

DSC_0521

Helloooooo 2013! I hope everyone had a magical New Years! I’m feeling particularly positive about the fresh start this year brings, and have many schemes and dreams up my sleeve that I am determined to make happen.

The beginning of the year has started off super hot, gone are the cardigan days! Upon waking to 40 degree heat today, my boss let me know that she had decided not to open because of it. Ahhh lazy retail! So in my impromptu (much welcomed) day off, I decided to whip out the new love of my life, my Gloria Swanson 1950′s dress.

This darling was a gift from my amazing mama for Christmas, and is a genuine Gloria Swanson design! I almost died – anyone who knows me knows how much of a Gloria worshipper I am. The silent screen star added clothing designer to her professions in the 50′s, designing under her label Forever Young which was a play on both her own indestructible looks and the desire of older women to look younger. The label was manufactured by the Puritan Dress company between 1951 and 1981.

My little navy dream is a 1950′s original Gloria Swanson by Forever Young, complete with matching cropped jacket that snaps in at the waist with a bow. The beading in the neckline is to die for, and girl do I love a strong shoulder pad! Plus it’s perfectly lightweight for Melbourne summer, making this my new go-to outfit.

I am wearing…

Dress & Jacket – 1950′s Gloria Swanson by Forever New from Fabulous 40′s & 50′s (Vintage Garage, Collingwood)

Straw Boater – costume shop in Brisbane

Hosiery – Sheer Vintage Pins by Leona Edmiston

Shoes – 60′s mary-janes, thrifted in Richmond

I’m now going to take this day off to put pen to paper and organise the mess that is my headspace. I never make new years resolutions, but this year I feel like shit needs to happen! Top of my list are…

1. Give more time and love to this little corner of the internet! I’ve let my little blog go a bit, and I need to focus and not be so lazy/haphazard! I’ve got so many ideas, I just need to stop daydreaming about them and DO them!

2. Keep building Blue Moon Vintage Salon. You guys have no idea the amount of treasures I have just waiting to be listed! Again, it’s the lazy bug (and my complete inaptness with things computer/internet related).

3. Be the healthiest me I can be. Cut back on the booze, step up the gym and change back from vegetarian to vegan. This is the one I’m most scared of, I have ZERO willpower! Especially when it comes to the red wine!

4. Make more of an effort in keeping in touch with old friends

5. Learn French

6. Get out of the city as much as I can

7. Budget like a slave so I can save and travel by the end of the year! Aim: a white Christmas .

I guess we’ll see how I go! 4 days in and I haven’t swayed yet! Do you have any New Years resolutions?

I Only Wear Nightwear Now

Meet the new love of my life, my beautiful new smokey mushroom coloured, gathered, pleated and lace trimmed vintage nightgown – gifted to me from my friend, the ever lovely Shantel. Shantel lives with my girl Charlotte in the most heavenly homely house of girls (with the exception of one lad) and I’ll be featuring their home soon as it is divine!

This beauty really did make my whole bloody week! It is so stunning, and completely fitting for the wearing-nightwear-as-daywear phase that I’ve been going through for a while now.It has the most beautiful gathered bust, latte coloured lace trim and floor length pleats.

I’ve got a beetroot salad awaiting me and House of Pleasures lined up to watch, which I’m positive will more than likely see a post dedicated to come the morning.

She turned to the sunlight and shook her yellow head, And whispered to her neighbor:”Winter is dead”

Vintage slip with embroidery – Clara Fox

Black underslip with lace – Thrifted

Silk shrug with beaded trim – Alannah Hill

Headpiece – self made using vintage millinery flowers

Hosiery – Falke

1940′s suede pumps – Clara Fox

Antique charm bracelet – my grandmother’s

Tassle belt – self made

I’ve been resourceful this week and have been making accessories again. In anticipation for Spring (5 days to go!) I’ve been embracing nature and flora and making floral wreaths from some vintage flowers and leaves I bought in the beginning of the year from our local op shop.

This is the outfit I wore to my interview with Di of Clara Fox. My interview will actually be a guest post on Vintage Shops Australia‘s blog, and should be up early this week so stay tuned!

I had a wild one last night at our house party, which actually turned into an enormous night! I’ve never seen so many people in one house before! It was so much fun but I wasn’t feeling the best today, let me tell you!

Here are some shots from the party, I didn’t take many unfortunately, I was a bit too pre-occupied!

I wore my 1930′s lace and chiffon gown.

Show and Tell with Jesse

Sometimes I really know that Jesse gets me when he finds me treasures like these. I came home the other day to some show and tells, and the following videos have to be some of the most beautiful imagery I’ve seen in a long time! Thankyou so much to my other half for dazzling my eyes once again.

A sample of some very early colour motion picture film. I can’t stop watching this, it’s honestly like a dream!

Extremely old, colour motion picture of floral arrangements with an epic soundtrack

Marlene Dietrich screen test for Blue Angel, 1930

Loie Fuller dancing Danse Serpentine, recorded in 1896. This video has always had me in entranced, and I’ve been rekindling my love for Loie Fuller recently.

Meanwhile I’ve been a busy little bee with lots of social engagements of late. Lot’s of birthdays, openings, coffee/lunch/dinner dates and we’re having a big house party at our place this weekend with some friend’s bands playing. I’ll have to collate all the party photos into one post after the weekend.

Also, exciting for Jesse, two of his bands have been announced to play Sound Summit next month in Newcastle, Mad Nanna and Asps. Unfortunately I can’t go, I’ll most likely be visiting Brisbane that weekend but anyone around Newcastle should check it out! Heaps of amazing bands also playing.

I’ll leave you with a snap from my good friend Tamara’s birthday dinner on the weekend in Chinatown. Happy Birthday Tamara!

Mourning Breakfast Dress

My amazing and incredibly stylish friend Justin Hinder came over with his partner Troy today for a lazy brunch. Justin is slowly making a name for himself in the Melbourne art world as the gallery assistant at Utopian Slumps as well, as dipping his toes into numerous other art ventures, and has been my go to resource and fountain of knowledge for anything art related throughout our friendship. One of my best friends, this guy is actually the funniest, silliest little naughty I know whilst being a constant style icon.

Rick Owens and Karen Walker both made appearances at breakfast

I appropriately dressed for a casual breakfast at home in this 1920′s black lace and silk mourning dress with a brooch of vintage flowers, 1950′s velvet opera coat with a fox fur shrug, and hat by Alannah Hill.

Lot’s of freshly squeezed orange juice, salmon bagels, strawberries, coffee and talk of toy poodles and french bulldogs went down, and now I’m ready to lay in bed with an army of movies and a cup of tea. It has been the dreariest week in Melbourne, so cold and rainy and this winter seems never ending. As much as I love rugging up in furs and knits I’m craving a bit of sunshine.

In other news, the All Tomorrow’s Parties ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’ festival was announced for Melbourne 2013 this week! I’m SOOO excited, the line up looks insane! Curated by The Drones,  I’ll be looking forward to seeing My Bloody Valentine, Godspeed You! Black Emperor,Beasts of Bourbon, Einstürzende Neubauten, HTRK, Swans, The Dead C and Melbourne favourite, Lost Animal. I feel like this lineup was made for me!

I love the title ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’ for the event, as I’m a massive Nico fan. Have you noticed that Drama of Exile is the title of the 1981 album by Nico?

Hoping everyone is having a fabulous weekend!
