I’ve got a bike. You can ride it if you like.
It’s got a basket, a bell that rings and things to make it look good.
I’d give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.

You’re the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I’ll give you anything, everything if you want things.

Syd Barrett – Bike

Happy Monday darlin’s! Here in Melbourne we’re experiencing such beautiful, pleasant summer weather – the type that makes you want to drink affogatos, swan around in light jackets and ride your bike to the park for a lazy cider. It’s inspired me to finally get my bike fixed, I’m ashamed to say it was neglected for a while and is in dire need of some lovin’.

It’s also got me dressing practically, and if you haven’t noticed from previous posts my two stapled at the moment seem to be my straw boater and checked pants (warning, do not try to ride to the shops in your favourite wiggle dress). Also I’m trying out new things with my hair, as much as I love my bob sometime’s a gal needs a change!

I am wearing…

Olive blazer – Savers

Silk blouse – Alannah Hill

High waisted checked pants – Thrifted in Brisbane

Straw Boater – costume shop in Brisbane

Vintage flowers in hair – Taken from a 40′s hat

Black suede 1940′s pumps – Clara Fox

Art Nouveau brooch – Gift from Jesse

In other news, I’m getting excited for the Vintage Meet-up Picnic this coming Sunday, organised by Jacinta of Razzle Dazzle Rose. I believe it will be from about 2 or 3 pm in Edinburgh Gardens, and I do hope to see you all there! I think it’s a really great idea that I hope turns into a regular event. There are so many vintage sweethearts I’m dying to beat one’s gums with. It should be the cat’s meow, so if you’re around you should come along!

It really is beginning to feel a lot like Christmas around here! The tree is looking festive, lunch plans are being nutted out, Mariah Carey’s Christmas album is on repeat, presents are nearly all bought, posted and wrapped and I am looking forward to a relaxing day with friends (I’m having an orphan Christmas as my family is up in Brisbane). Also this is the first year in 7 years I haven’t had to work Boxing Day in retail! Amazing!

Jesse and I both get reeeeeeeeally into Chrissie and always go the traditional, tasteful red, green and gold. Also is it just me or is there an abundance of horrible wrapping paper around this year???? We went ye ole’ faithful brown paper packages tied up with string, a humble winner every time. Here are some shots of our tree, featuring Chairman Meow.

I’m getting so warm inside just thinking about Christmas! The one thing I really get into is gift giving. I lovvvve searching and planning and making the perfect gifts for those most special to me. It’s rare that I stop to think about what I would love to recieve, I never expect much back and giving really is the joy for me, but I’ve been thinking about what my wishlist is this year and I hope Santa read’s my letter.

Gabrielle’s Ultimate Chic Chrissie Wish List

1. This amazzzze 1920′s dress with batwing capelet from FabGabs Etsy store. I feel like it would improve my life quality by at least 180%.

2. Some beautiful perfume oil blends from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab. I have my eye on so many scents, I get overwhelmed everytime I go on the site! What’s tickling my nose though is Siren, Ave Maria Gratia Plena, Salome, Endymion, Antique Lace, The Forest Reverie, Seraphim etc etc etc….with names like that how can you go wrong?

3. Grace Coddington’s memoir, ‘Grace’. I bought this for my mother for Christmas and it almost didn’t make it in the post to Brisbane. I need my own copy!

4. The perfect 40′s tweed jacket. So elusive.

5. A piece from Julia DeVille’s Taxidermy art.

6. This Tarot Deck scented candle. Turkish rose, dry musk of labdanum and a hint of incense smoke. Yes pleeeeeease!

7. An antique cigarette holder, so I can at least pretend like I’m a lady.

8. A bog box of macaroons from La Belle Miette

9. A dried floral headpiece from Harriet of Bright Young Twin’s project, Lady Of The Flowers

10. A gift voucher to The Junk Company. I have paid my favourite haunt so many visits lately and there is always something that catches my eye and my heart. At the moment i’m coveting the natural history cabinet, a 1930′s velvet cap, the wonderful selection of globes and this lady, who I am determined to make my own.

To be honest I’m the type pf gal who’d be happy with a bag of lollies and a smooch under the mistletoe. What’s on your Christmas wish list?

I’ll Be Your Mirror

DSC_0361

Hello Kittens,

I thought I’d just stop by and say hello after the weekend. I’ve had a good couple of days, working lots, going to yoga, saw friends White Hex play on Friday night at Liberty Social (before a wardrobe malfunction that sent me home early and damning 50′s wiggle dresses), got an amazing raw veggie stack and kombucha at Veggie Bar with Jesse this afternoon, bought new Liquid Marsielle body wash from Klein’s, answered a heap of emails,  went to Luwow on Saturday night for Evie’s birthday and had a Mai Tai, Christmas shopped (and shopped….and shopped) on Friday and got acquainted with my new housemate’s kitty Chairman Meow (who is the cutest/weirdest little ball of white fur). Now I’m kicking back with some tea, red cedar incense and Comus.

Charlotte, myself and Evie

Hope everyone is equally chilled/blissed/zenned out! If not, you will be after this…

Life Snippets

Hello sweet things,

I’ve had a rough week, so sorry I’ve been absent from this little corner of the internet. I’ve been feeling pretty down, had a lot of changes going on and I just received news from my mother that my darling pup Winston Churchill passed away yesterday. He was the best dog in the world, and got a bad tick that meant we had to make the hard decision to put him down. I’m pretty devastated.

I thought I’d just share some instagram snaps of late. I promise to be in better spirits soon, I have some lovely posts lined up that I’ll get around to posting in the next couple of days.

Another Year, Another Cape

On Sunday afternoon I had a couple of friends over for drinks, cheese and good times as sort of a birthday afterthought. It gave me a chance to test out my new 1930′s cape for the first time, and I had a great time! Although my head was really not feeling it’s best the next day, pretty sure I stayed in bed watching multiple episodes of American Horror Story (i.e. killing even more brain cells).

I am wearing…

1950′s silk dress – Shag

1930′s fringed silk cape – Anonymous Posh

Brown suede 1920′s style shoes – Clara Fox

Red velvelt & satin turban – Sunday Best Fair a couple of years ago

Art Deco earrings – Ebay

Tights – Alannah Hill

Ring – Diva

It was a lil’ bit windy and my fringing was a bit precarious in the garden…whoops

I ended up buying a heap of flowers (as well as stealing a bunch from my neighbouring streets…), drinking wayyyy too much delicious punch and getting down to Mariah Carey (don’t ever knock her) with some of my closest squeezes, and really did – for the first time since I’ve lived in Melbourne – have a truly wonderful birthday. Thankyou to everyone who came along or sent sexy well wishes!

Just A Quickie

Hey babes, just thought I’d drop in to let you know that I am having THE BEST BIRTHDAY EVER and that I now own this hand-stitched silk 1930′s cape and my life has just improved like 180% because of it. I’m having people over this weekend for punch and drunken dancing in the living room and I plan on whipping this bad gal out then, so I’ll do a proper outfit post then. These shoddy webcam photos do it no justice, I think I’m in love!

Today is actually the best birthday I’ve had in years, feeling so much love from everyone! My mama-bear sent me a heap of Aesop products I’d run out of, I sauntered around antique stores all morning, bought some vintage stationary and just got home from treatin’ myself to a cheeky manni up the road. I have never had a professional manicure can you believe! It’s sooooo heaven!

Charlotte’s about to come over, we’re gonna crack open the bottle of Chardon my housemate bought me, then head up the road with some friends to Prudence for a few bevvies.

Oh, and I realised a while back that I share my birthday with Louise Brooks, my ultimate muse in life. So chuffed! Happy Birthday Lulu!

Fashion, Fairy Tales and Gin Gimlets with Rococo Vintage

In my hours and hours spent window shopping on Etsy, I sometimes come across a shop that shoots straight to my heart, leaving me salivating over every item and wanting more. Rococo Vintage is one of those rare beauties. Curated by Rebecca Emily Darling, the shop carries incredible hand-picked and quality items from the late 1800′s up to the 1960′s. According to her website, the elusive Rebecca Emily Darling is a little girl who loves fairy tales and gin gimlets, and sells vintage clothing for tyrannical aesthetes. She lives in an apartment with Mary Pickford’s ghost, as well as the specters of three blind mice, and her cats seem to like this very much.

Think 1920s flapper dresses, 1930s art deco dresses, 1940s swing dresses, 1950s cupcake dresses and 1960s wiggle dresses- Miss Darling has it all covered.

I’m so excited to announce that Rococo Vintage is offering a 12% discount off the entire shop, this week only, for all Drama of Exile readers!!!!! To treat yourself to a beautiful new piece of collectable vintage, visit the Etsy shop here and claim your discount with the code dramaofexile. This offer is only valid until the 14th of November, so get in quick!

Here are my picks from the shop…

1930′s Floral Silk Velvet Art Deco Dress

1950′s Sequins and Tulle Fairy Tale Ballerina Cupcake Dress

Edwardian Blue, White, and Pink Polkadot dress

1960′s Green and Yellow Floral Damask Cocktail Dress with Bow

1930′s Silver and Lilac Ombre Slipper Satin Evening Gown

1930s Sheer Buttercup Yellow Blouse

1950′s Brown Lace and Silk Illusion Cocktail Dress with Pink Roses

1920′s Pink and Metallic Gold Floral Silk Chiffon Flapper Dress

40s Black and Lace Illusion Neckline Swing Dress

1950′s Green Japanese Floral Orange Blossom Print Party Dress

Whilst your visiting the online store, also make sure to stop by Rebecca’s beautiful tumblr for some beautiful imagery, and make sure to follow her on instagram!

Happy shopping, kittens!

Lace Dreams

Hello!

It’s Jesse’s birthday tomorrow and we are about to crack open the champagne for some celebratory drinks at home tonight. I’ve been feeling a real 50′s/60′s vibe lately and the weather is so beautiful and warm I thought it would be a good chance to wear this dreamy 60′s lace wiggle dress I picked up from Clara Fox a couple of years ago yet don’t break out too often. Being so heavily influenced by the 20′s and 30′s I feel somewhat fraudish when I stray into other eras.

However this baby is one of my all time favourites. The mossy green lace over the dusty rose is such a lovely combination, and it has these amazing tails at the back (although these can get dangerous when hopping out of cabs/going to the bathroom…).

Dress – Clara Fox

Headpiece – Alannah Hill

Shoes – Thrifted

Shoe clips – Lost and Found

Knee Highs – Voodoo

I also picked up the latest issue of Lula magazine the other day and have been stealing moments with it all week. I feel like it lost it a bit for me the past few issues but the latest is incredible. There’s an interview with my favourite woman Lena Dunham in it. I got so addicted to season one of Girls and can’t wait for it to come back next year!

Hope you all have been having a fabulous weekend. How are your Halloween plans coming along?

A Room With A View

So as I had mentioned earlier, Jesse and I have moved into our new room in our North Melbourne terrace and it is absolutely divine! I’m loving having a balcony, especially since the days are definitely getting warmer. I had my girls Charlotte and Evie over for a celebratory balcony bevvie on Friday night, and apart from a near fatal candle disaster (I am a candle fiend, and a warning to never leave a bunch of candles unattended whilst sinking a wine ship on yo’ balcony!) it was purrfect! I’m also totally into setting up house, and our new room is not only bigger but a lot grander, with a darling fireplace and ceiling rose.

We hung out today drinking coffee and listening to Bessie Smith whilst wolf-whistling at the hot stuff walking down Hawke Street.

Dress – Alannah Hill

Cloche Hat – designed and made my little ole’ me

1960′s mary-janes – thrifted

Tights – Jonathon Aston

I’m wishing for new furniture though, and with all this new wall space I’m dying to fill it up. More is more in my books. It’s not perfect yet, but here are some snippets from our ‘boudoir’.

Things are still in a bit of disarray (mainly my wardrobe) and I can’t believe I am still struggling for space (I have a LOT more magazines/ceramic animals/knick-knacks than I thought I did!) but it is feeling a lot more homely. I just wish someone would give me a million dollars so I could deck the place out in exquisite furniture and decor! Ebay is killing me of late!

I’m working like a mad woman in the next couple of weeks, mainly in the lead-up to the Day of the Dead festival on November 2nd. My work is doing some super fun things for the day, and I have been roped into making a few batches of Gingerdead Men as well as being crowned the Catrina of the night, so large floral hats and face painting skeleton style to come!

Guest Post for Vintage Shops Australia

Hey sweet things,

So I’ve been a bit slack lately getting this up but my guest post for Vintage Shops Australia went up last week. I covered the Love Vintage Show for them a couple of weekends ago and it was a blast! I’ve already done a post on here about the Friday night but check out the post here for my review of the whole weekend.

I’ll be doing more posts for Vintage Shops in the near future, more personally orientated and focusing on the 1920′s. Can’t wait!

Here are some of my favourite shots from the weekend.
