Last Monday Jesse and I finally moved house! We’re back on Brunswick St in a fab little house with some dear friends, and loving it. It’s great to be back on the north side again and being able to visit friends easily, get my bread from Babka again and walk to work! With us both working so much we’ve only just finished unpacking everything (almost) and although I’ve definitely downsized, I’m so happy with how the place is looking.

I’ve just been pottering around on my day off, making pot after pot of tea, working on some great new posts and visiting my new neighbour Clara Fox (this is going to be a dangerous living arrangement, I can tell). I wore my favourite new outfit made up of some pieces I picked up at the vintage show, and I’m really into pinning my fringe back lately. I’m so bad with hairstyles, having a bob and naturally straight hair means I never have to do anything with it, so I feel a bit like a novice when it comes to vintage hairstyling. Any tips and tricks for a bobbed haired gal like myself would be greatly appreciated!

Hello lovers!

I have a special guest post today for you from the delightful Ana of Where The Roses Go. This little darlin’ caught my eye a while back with her long locks and dreamy 60′s style. I got her to delve a little deeper into why the 1960′s resonates with her, and I hope to have some more guest posts from some special vintage ladies up in the coming months.

When Gabrielle messaged me about making a guest post I was over the moon – DoE is by farone of my favourite blogs. My only problem was finding a subject that would fit; her life andstyle are pure glamour while me, well, I’m the exact opposite. But since she wanted to feature a different decade and lifestyle I guessed that exploring why I live the way I live would be appropriate.

My name is Ana and I live around England. Since 2010 I’ve been moving around to have new experiences (from the heart of London to an island in Brazil). My passion for the 60s started from a very young age; my parents could never let this decade go. Songs that my mum would sing to make me fall asleep were My Bonnie, Oh My Love, She Smiled Sweetly among many others. She’d put Yellow Submarine to play on VHS and watch it with me after work. My earliest memory would be me playing with the cutlery under a table while my dad and his friends sang Come Together at the top of their lungs.

Needless to say that my love for the 60s came from music, from the cheesiest pop song to the complex songs composed on an eastern tempo. Photographs of my family during the 60s and 70s were all over the house, but it wasn’t enough so I asked my parents and to show me all they had. Once I had seen all the existent records of my family my obsession grew and I needed to see other people’s photographs- which led my dad to give me a book about the 60s on pictures. I wanted to have all those beautiful dresses and exotic make up, but being as young as I was none of this was possible. Still, this is when I became interested in fashion.

When I finished school (and could finally wear something that wasn’t my uniform) I went straight to this big second hand shop and bought everything that screamed 60s to me. Looking back I see how hideous some of these pieces were, but it wasn’t until I moved to London for
the first time that I came across the beautiful frocks I own now. After trying all sorts of styles from the 60s I found myself comfortable with the end of the era. I love the paisley, scrollwork, embroidery, loose pieces of fabric and colours.

My main inspiration is Marianne Faithfull – I love everything about her. But Anita Pallenberg, Mick Jagger and all of the Stones, late 60s Pattie Boyd and the essence of Biba are also a big part of me. I have a collection of clothes, accessories, cosmetics and items in general from the
60s that’s always growing, but instead of keeping them safe on a shelf I like to put them to use.

My pleasure comes from experience- how life was lived-  and to be in constant contact with something that carries energy from the 60s is just brilliant. Of course I make use of up-to-date technology but only what I find necessary. I don’t have a modern mobile phone or the latest computer, I much rather watch a good film and read a book when at home or hang out with my friends and enjoy their company instead of checking messages and other things on a “smart phone” ever second. I like to study all the aspects of the life and culture from the 60s and apply the best of to my life. Some people may say I live in my own world but frankly, my world is amazing!

Hello you beautiful things,

I’m currently sitting in bed, in my new room, with a full goblet of red wine. Completely exhausted yet exhilarated from a completely fab weekend at the Love Vintage Show. This year was better than ever, and I had such an amazing time, picked up some incredible gems and drank way too many champagnes. These are some photos (courtesy of Evie) from last night, as we waited for the doors to open at the exhibition building in Carlton Gardens whilst sharing a cheeky cig by the pond (how good is my new ciggie holder?!) . I’ll be posting a full review soon on the Vintage Shops Australia blog, as well as here- so do stay tuned.

I thought I’d share some images from my Tumblr, which I realised today I’ve now had for four years. It’s progressively turned into a portrait based image archive of women from the late 1800′s – early 1930′s (although you can dive into my archives for when I used to post lots of different vintage, images I just liked, fashion and lots of music).

I was noticing the particular type of women I post and thinking about what draws me to that aesthetic. It’s mostly the vampy, smokey eyed, raven haired silent screen era actresses. Obvious common favourites being Theda Bara, Alla Nazimova, Pola Negri etc. There’s just something I find intriguing about that European mystique, maybe it’s the Scorpio in me. I guess that’s part of what draws me so much to the flapper era, the style obviously but also the idea of a sassy gal just wanting to have a good time and answer to no one but herself. A real independent lay-deeee, am I right?

It’s pretty clear to see where I get my love of antiques from when you look inside mum’s house. Everything is so picture perfect and brimming with fabulous 19th Century mahogany furniture, soft minty colours and ceramics. Her and my step-dad also collect antique clocks and oil lamps! Mum moved out to Mount Crosby the same time I moved to Melbourne, so it’s not the house I grew up in and more mum’s ‘dream house’. The only times I’ve really been up to Brisbane have been for events such as weddings/Christmas etc. and so it was so nice to be there and actually look in depth at the home she has built. There is something to look at everywhere you turn, and every piece has history to it.

We didn’t venture too far from the house except for making a trip out to Paddington for lunch with my brothers and to visit the antique centre. Brisbane doesn’t have anywhere near as much vintage as Melbourne, but I do have to say what they do have is fantastic. The Paddington Antique Centre and the still relatively new Ipswich Antique Centre (which mum and I popped into on the way home from the pet store on Monday) are absolutely overflowing with to-die-for vintage and antiques. I was so depressed I only brought a small carry-on bag otherwise I would have gone crazy!

On Sunday night mum took me up to her room and we looked through some family heirloom jewellery…which she passed onto me! I now have some amazing antique pieces that I am almost too scared to wear, they’re so beautiful. Amongst them are my great grandmother’s late 1800′s emerald and pearl necklace, a selection of 1920′s screw back earrings, early 1900′s paste necklaces, a ruby and diamond ring, sapphire and diamond bracelet and my mother’s rose gold and diamond ring (which I love wearing because I always remember when she used to wear it herself as I was growing up). I am one lucky lady!

On the Monday before I left, mum and I went down the back garden to visit her pet goat, Mary. I am soooo obsessed with Mary, Mum’s had her for about three years now and every time I come up she is more and more domesticated. Mum walks her around on a leash sometimes and she wags her tail like a puppy when she sees you coming down the hill. Her favourite thing to eat is flowers (according to my brother) and Mum pulls down the branches so she can have a cheeky little nibble. I never thought a fully grown goat could be adorable, but she is such a honey!

I was so sad I couldn’t stay any longer, but with work commitments I had to. I know I would never move back to Brisbane for many reasons, but this visit really reminded me of the things I do miss about it. The majority of my friends have moved to Melbourne, inter-state or overseas (as everyone who is from Brisbane does), so I only really go up to see my family or my best friend (who is about to move to Melbourne too). I think as well because now my family lives further out, when I do go I don’t have to go into the city or be around bogans in maxi dresses and gladiator sandals in the Queen St Mall, it’s also really changed my perspective of Brisbane and how much it really does have to offer.

Now I’m back to the daily Melbourne grind, things are changing a lot. I started back at my old work, Kinki Gerlinki, this week and it’s been so fun sliding back into work there. The girls are massive dreamboats and it’s almost like I’ve rewound my life back to 2010, in a good way. I’m working in the Centre Place store off Flinders Lane, so do pop in if you’re around and say hi.

Jesse and I are also currently packing up ceramic miniature after vintage wall hanging and attempting to move the nest we’ve made in our house in North Melbourne to our new house with friend’s on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy. I’ll be sad to leave this place but excited to be back on the north side again and living with some total babes. Our new house is also directly across the road from Clara Fox (I’m not exaggerating, quite literally straight across the road!) so I’m super happy about that. Don’t know if my wallet will feel the same way…

I haven’t purchased an Australian Vogue in years but could not resist picking up the latest issue when I saw the words ‘The Great Gatsby Collector’s Edition’ emblazoned across the cover. I still am torn about the upcoming remake. I don’t know yet how I feel about this modern take on the 1920′s classic, as I’m a stickler for authenticity and hearing Florence and The Machine in the trailer made me feel a bit queezy to say the least.

However, the latest Vogue has carried on the 1920′s vibe throughout the issue, with an interview with Miuccia Prada about her collaboration with Baz Luhrman and Catherine Martin on the costumes for the film, Karlie Kloss on the cover as Vogue’s ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’, Hugh Stewart’s backstage and onset portraits of the cast of The Great Gatsby and Luhrman’s recollections of the production as well as some roaring twenties themed beauty segments and articles on how the jazz age is infiltrating modern fashion.

With the film coming out only next month and the hype that has been surrounding it for the past year now, I’ll be interested to see how long this ‘trend’ lasts. To quote F.Scott himself, I guess ‘reserving judgements is a matter of infinite hope’.

The other weekend my girl gang (Evie, Charlotte & Sarah) went to Club D’luxx, a night put on every six months in Melbourne where the dress code is strict Filthy or Fabulous. The night got pretty debaucherous to say the least, but we managed to take some snaps before we left the house. I think we all basically encompassed a little bit of both pre-requisites – Sarah’s blue lipstick, Charlotte’s slick hair and Evie’s ‘I-dream-of-Jeannie’ (or as I prefer, I-dream-of-Evie) look served up filthy fabulous realness. Can I get an amen?
